Outer Banks Beach Report 2.29.2012 | Travel OBX Informed

Good afternoon! We have a storm approaching the Outer Banks of North Carolina; however, at the moment the beach is is simply stunning. (We’ll call it the calm before the storm.) Gorgeous greenish blue ocean, crisp yet warm air, S winds around 9 mph with a mixture of clouds in the sky. It feels like it’s about to start pouring, but the 68 degrees temps is keeping a smile on our faces!

Enjoy your beach report for this afternoon…

Leaping into a 2012 Vacation | Travel OBX Informed

Hello February 29th, we haven’t seen you for some time now!

Here on the Outer Banks we’re celebrating Leap Year by jumping right into the life of vacations. Something we all have to agree on loving. Who doesn’t enjoy a vacation by the shore, especially the shores of North Carolina. The beaches here are secluded, pristine, and absolutely stunning; however, that isn’t the only thing that makes the shore of North Carolina so wonderful. Our guests, our vacationers, our travelers, and our tenants are what complete the Outer Banks of North Carolina. We wouldn’t be able to enjoy such a place without sharing our soft sand with you. So if you haven’t planned your Outer Banks vacation for the year of 2012 do so now! For this is the year to live, reach all limits, and simply enjoy yourself. Why? Because it’s Leap Year, and we’d like you to leap out on the beach with us!

For those of you who have never vacationed in an Outer Banks vacation rental, keep reading…

Breathing in the fresh beach air lets you know that you’re here, you’ve made it… it’s finally time for a week full of good times, and memories will be made to last. After a long drive to the Outer Banks there’s nothing better than feeling a sense of total freedom when you step into your spacious, private, gorgeous vacation rental. There are many benefits to reserving a vacation rental, rather than a hotel room, hands down. To enjoy a true relaxing vacation you’ll need privacy, space, family/ friends, and…

  • Amenities that vary from having a place to rest your head to large hot tubs, game rooms, in home theaters, private pools, and much more that you can’t always find at a hotel, at least not to yourself.
  • A location that will give you the freedom you’re seeking. Stay in an oceanfront rental overlooking the Atlantic ocean, or a sound side rental that offers panoramic views of the sun setting over the sound. Perhaps you’d rather be near shops, dining, and local attractions for a busy week on the banks? The point is, you choose.
  • An affordable vacation, one where you’ll save money. Find a deal with Southern Shores Realty then split the cost between extended family, and friends. Now we’re really talking about savings. Vacations are about being together, and there’s nothing more special than actually spending time together as one. (In one home NOT 5 rooms.) You will even save on entertainment, and dining costs. For you have those amenities to choose between that will keep everyone busy all week long, and a full kitchen to share moments around the dinner table.

It’s hard to place a value on a vacation, they’re priceless. Make memories to last your lifetime, and give the children a chance to become best friends with their cousins. (They’ll come forever to share the experience you gave them with their own children. Trust us.) Traveling to the Outer Banks will easily become one of your favorite family traditions. This is your year, Leap Year 2012, to travel, vacation, and have a good time! You deserve it, and we’d love to share our special banks with you.

Outer Banks Beach Report 2.28.2012 | Travel OBX Informed

Happy Tuesday everyone! February is slowing coming to an end, and here at the beach it’s gorgeous! Mild, neutral temperatures have been around for the past few days, 48 as of right now. However, the wind is coming in from the North around 8 knots, creating some action out on the water. (Very choppy, and drifting.) Overall, we have a nice day here at the beach, and we wish every single one of you were here to enjoy it with us! This has been such a warm, busy winter on the Outer Banks with lots of company, more than average at least. We’ve been loving it! It’s a shame every winter couldn’t be like this you know? Enjoy your beach report for this morning from Byrd Street in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina.

One more thing, if you were vacationing RIGHT NOW on the OBX… what would you do for the day?

See you soon!

FREE Kids Night at The Lost Colony | Travel OBX Informed

I was just skimming through the winter newsletter when the word FREE caught my attention. Am I the only one this happens to? With the help of Kitty Hawk Kites kids (12 and under) will receive FREE admission to The Lost Colony on Monday nights… ALL SUMMER LONG! I believe this just may be the news of the week. The Lost Colony  is a fun, family oriented, outdoor drama located on Roanoke Island, North Carolina. Since 1937, over four million people have seen this dramatization of the plight and mysterious disappearance of the first English settlers in America.

It attracts the majority of our visitors to its gorgeous waterside theater; however, tickets can get a bit pricey when your talking about 8 or more people. Now everyone has a chance to discover the mystery of this unique Outer Banks story on Monday nights! On your next Outer Banks vacation, plan to go to the theater for a phenomenal showing on the water, and be sure to arrive early to catch the amazing sunset. It’s something your children will remember, forever.

You can also take part in the backstage tour, held right before show time. Go back in time as your guided through the park, dressing room, and practice stage while getting in depth descriptions of The Lost Colony’s history. It’s truly a neat night out! Below is a recap video of the Backstage Tour from 2011.

Enjoy your Monday Nights this summer at The Lost Colony,

Around the Outer Banks at Jockey’s Ridge | Travel OBX Informed

Good Morning! For your Monday ‘Around the Outer Banks‘ Crystal, and I took a drive down the beach to the Jockey’s Ridge State Park! An area enriched with dunes. It stands as the largest dune on the East Coast actually. (Follow this link to learn more about the living dune.) It’s very family friendly, offers panoramic views of the ocean AND sound, and mostly it is a very diverse area. Enjoy a day at one of the most talked about State Parks on the Outer Banks for an endless amount of FUN with your friends, and family. Children race through the sand, climb the dune just to slide down while others learn to fly for the first time on a hang glider. Adults also enjoy the simplicity of this location, for it provides a sense of relaxation, and our elderly individuals enjoy watching it all happen from the nice boardwalk which overlooks the large dune. Everyone wins at the Jockey’s Ridge State Park!

We have a lovely day here on the Beach! We are so blessed to live in such a wonderful place, and we love sharing it with you. Use us, and our videos to help plan your next trip the Outer Banks. Temperatures are already in the low 50′s with soft winds coming in from the SW. Partly cloudy; however, the SUN is shining! Enjoy your view.

Is this OBX Sea Star living? | Travel Informed

Good Morning. As most of you know we’ve had two great aspects to this wonderful week in February. One, temperatures have been in the 60′s for the past two days (we have a high of 70 degrees today!) Two, we’ve had dozens of Sea stars, also referred to as Starfish, or echinoderms covering our shores. It’s been great! However, there’s been a lot of worry around beach, because sometimes it’s hard to determine whether the echinoderms are still living. Or rather, it’s assumed they are not when washed ashore. Watch this video below for a demonstration on how to test whether or not you should take the creatures home with you for decoration, or home crafts.

Bring a beach bucket with you so that when you find the cute stars from the sea you can fill it up with FRESH, CLEAN (no sand), salt water. To test, place the star in the bucket, and wait/ watch it for five to ten minutes. When the time is up you should start to see short tentacles moving along the arms. This is how you can determine whether or not your found treasure is still alive. If so, release it back to it’s home- the sea.

Say you found one that isn’t still living. If it is small you can air dry it to preserve it for many years to come. If it happens to be large buy a bottle of isopropyl alcohol, and soak the star for 1-5 days. Then you will want to air dry it in low humidity, and cool air.

Enjoy!
