OBX Beach Tip | Skimboarding | Travel Informed

Have you ever considered Skim boarding? It’s an OBX favorite for locals including visitors, as well as guest. Pretty much, any loyal beach goer has either tried skim boarding (including myself) or has witnessed others doing so. The object is to skim over to water towards an onshore wave, and pretty much whip it! It’s a fun hobby, challenging, and rewarding like most water sports on the Outer Banks. Children especially love to attempt skim boarding. For one, they look up to older kids who are also skimming, and for two they have no fear! (It’s a bit challenging to run, and jump on a board that is skimming across the water; however, once you master your own technique you are good to go!)

Skim boarding is an affordable activity for the beach. If you are vacationing on a budget I suggest introducing your little ones to skimming. It’ll keep them busy on the beach, and happy all week long! Skim boards can even be bought in our local Walmart, or wings (boards perfect for learning, and attempting.)

Crashing waves

This afternoon is gorgeous on the Outer Banks. Chilly, but very pretty. Take a look at this quick video that was shot in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. The waves are crashing perfectly. (Luckily I didn’t fall asleep on the beach listening to the sound of it.) Enjoy!

Beach Tip- Be sure to bring a towel on days like today so that you are able to take nap without getting sandy!

Watersport Tips for your OBX vacation

When guests come to the Outer Banks of North Carolina, water sports are usually on the top of their to do list. Whether it is trying a new one like kite boarding, or having a chance to experience one that they already can’t get enough of like surfing for instance. With two big bodies of water surrounding this beautiful barrier island, there is nothing more consistent, convenient, and fulfilling than water sports. However, keep in mind the following tips when attempting a new water sport..

Talk to a local surf shop

Along the OBX you will find multiple surf shops who conveniently have experts that can give you helpful advice specifically on the sport you are interested in.

Ask for a lesson

Like I mentioned above, our local surf shops have water sport experts working inside who usually are the ones in charge of giving lessons which vary from shop to shop. For example, Kitty Hawk Kites provides private lessons while Corolla Surf Shop host group lessons. Visit our main website for a complete list of what each surf shop offers, and take your pick! Grabbing a quick lesson can save you in the long run for you are safe, learning the proper techniques, and in good hands.

Buddy Up

When heading out into a big body of water, be sure to bring a buddy along with you. Our weather (winds) change constantly so it’s better to not get stuck in a sticky situation alone (even if you are a pro) especially if you are kiteboarding. You just never know, and we want you to stay completely safe while you vacation on the Outer Banks.

Kayaking, surfing, skim boarding, kite boarding, and SUPing is just the beginning of fun sports in our waters! You also have jet skiing, parasailing, and sailing as well. Not everyone can be a pro (some are actually pretty tough to conquer) so be alert.

Rainy days on the Outer Banks: What to do…

The rain isn’t always a bad thing when you are on your Outer Banks vacation. It is more of mother nature’s way of cooling us beach goers off throughout the day, usually at the most random times. The Outer Banks did not experience too many summer showers this year, even though we needed it badly, due to the steady drought that we had. It is common, two to three times a week, to receive those afternoon drizzles us Outer Bankers love so much! Lets say Jim Cantore predicts rain for an entire day or more during the week of your stay on the Outer Banks with Southern Shores Realty.

More than likely this is, hypothetically speaking, a complete vacation buzz kill. Here at Southern Shores Realty, we know that absolutely no one wishes or wants rain to fall while they are at beach so we have taken the time to fill you in on all the exciting activities and attractions offered on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. So instead of allowing the rain to put a damper on your day (if Mr. Cantore assumes right) take our advice by enjoying either a day of shopping or taking part in some of the Outer Banks indoor activities, and definitely stop in for lunch/ dinner at one of Southern Shores Realty favorite restaurants to eat on a rainy day at the beach.

Some of our indoor activities include bowling, movie theaters, miniature golf, laser tag, rock climbing, comedy shows, and of course the ladies favorite, shopping!

Indoor Activities on the Outer Banks:

Nags Head Bowling Center

Nags Head Bowling Center is located in Nags Head, North Carolina. Of course bowling is an indoor activity, but this center calls for so much more than just bowling! They offer an arcade, small cafe, bowling, pro shop, parties or gatherings, and birthday parties. Talk about true quality time with the family. There is even perks to the Nags Head Bowling Center like if your children bring their last report card with them they are eligible to receive free tokens to the arcade with good grades.

R/C Movie Theater

There is always perfect weather in a movie theater, it never fails you. Plus, what is more relaxing than lounging in a theater chair and eating popcorn (you may have it this time) while watching a new release or a show you happened to miss. Whether it is just you, the family, or  your significant other, going to the movies is always fun on a rainy day! You may even purchase your tickets online through Fandango, if you haven’t heard. During the summer months there are midnight showings here and there.

Pioneer Movie Theater

If you are on a budget, this is the movie theater for you! They only play one family movie a week so call before you make the drive downtown Manteo. This is an older kind of theater, very historic looking, and family oriented. Southern Shores Realty loves it here, for the staff is so friendly and you are even greeted at the door by the owner himself.

Destination Fun

That says it all, Destination fun is nothing less than FUN for everybody. Here you can enjoy an arcade room filled with more than 30 games, 3D black lit miniature golf, pirates cove laser tag, 8 pool tables, concession stand, prizes, and privates rooms are available upon request. There isn’t much more to say except be sure to stop by this fun destination; it is worth your time and money. Your family will be thanking you.

Kitty Hawk Kites Rock Climbing Wall

For only seven dollars you receive two climbs up the rock climbing wall at Kitty Hawk Kites! Challenging, fun, and located right in their Nags Head store. Plus it is surrounded by stores, boutiques, and other fun in the Jockey Ridge Crossing Shopping Center.

The Comedy Club

Join The Comedy Club for a ninety minute showing of some the nations funniest people, ever. “This is your chance to see nationally touring comedians who have appeared on shows such as Comedy Central, Last Comic Standing, and HBO. Many of our comedians are Headliners in Las Vegas, Atlantic City, and on the Cruise Lines” states the comedy club on their website. Looking for a public beach access? Consider..

There are a few things you should recognize before hitting the beach up, that is if you are driving. You must follow certain rules that are set for the Outer Banks. First would be finding a public beach access which most of our towns provide although a few do not like Duck, NC. I would suggest looking throughout Nags Head, or Kill Devil Hills, because they have multiple spots opened up to the public.

Search for blue and white signs with an orange sun in the middle, these indicate a public access. Then make sure to read the parking rules, because if not you may end up with some unwanted troubles. The parking rules provide you with important parking information that could indeed effect you, and your vehicle so make sure you do not pass these by.

Beach accesses accommodate differently like whether a bath house or a port a potty is provided. Some even offer foot, and/ or full showers for you to rinse the sand off with after leaving the beach. Also, the parking lots can be quite large while others can be a tight fit. Consider these details when planning your day at the beach.

After finding the perfect public beach access for your family make sure to ALWAYS use a boardwalk, dedicated pathway, or a specified access when hauling your accessories over (most parking lots are located across the beach road.) Of course choosing an access that forbids you from having to cross the road would be the smartest move, but lets face it.. that can not always be done. Take advantage of pedestrian crossing for they catch the attention of drivers. Also beware that traipsing over the bare, and oceanfront dunes is forbidden for this may contribute to erosion.

Enjoy the rest of your summer beach days, and stay safe!

The wireless reading device on the beach.. aka THE KINDLE!

The BEST beach days simply include a comfortable chair, umbrella, hat or sun-glasses, an one of those can not stop reading stories!

Reading is key to experiencing one of those FAMOUS relaxing Outer Banks moments. An actual book used to be an essential in the beach bag, but not ever since Amazon came out with the creative Kindle. “They work best when you are literally reading on the beach” says this Outer Banks guest (to the right) while explaining the “no-glare” benefit of the Kindle. Of course there isn’t glares coming off of a paper back book, but do you have the full accessibility like you do with the wireless reading device?

With the Kindle you are able to read ALL of your books and magazines, browse new books, read samples, and download at the touch of your finger. What does that mean for OBX vacationers who love reading in the warm sun with an ocean view about 10 feet in front of them? MORE SPACE! yup, your thought is right. NO MORE dragging that heavy beach tote from the car all the way to the perfect relaxing spot. The Kindle makes your life easier, simple as that. It is light, and sized just right for your beach bag.

Out of all the reasons why people escape to the Outer Banks of North Carolina, the main one is to feel the relaxing benefit of the beach. Everyone needs that one week out of the year to refresh, slow down, get away, and have some fun. Does anyone feel like the summer is close to ending? Stressed from work, the children, and  the significant other? Feeling rushed almost everyday? Thankfully, if you JUST NEED to vacation the Outer Banks can unwind the body’s mind! The simplest way to feel everything wash away is to grab that comfortable chair, and read a book on the warm pretty beaches of North Carolina.

The Kindle- just a perfect beach thing :)

If you can not wait any longer to get away from the stressful life style of an average American then you may Book Your Outer Banks Vacation Rental Here.

Surf fishing on the Outer Banks

SURF FISHING FUN ON THE OUTER BANKS OF NORTH CAROLINA!

This couple from Northern Virginia was out surf fishing this morning, having a blast if you can’t tell! “I’ve been lucky all morning long, you can go check out everything that I have caught if you would like to” said the gentleman holding the fishing rod. Just like my dad, this man was proud of his catches on the OBX, and he also let me know that fishing doesn’t get better elsewhere. Like most fisherman, he loves reeling them in on the Outer Banks. It is a delight for anglers.

There is numerous ways to fish on the Outer Banks including

  • surf & pier fishing
  • brackish fishing
  • fly and sound fishing
  • inshore & offshore charter fishing

Surf fishing, seen in the picture above, is probably one of the most consistent types of fishing here on our banks, and obviously the least expensive. It all comes down to your preference, and what you already have in your tackle box of course. A mixture of tropical and cold water species are within our surf thanks to the combination of warm water, and the regular fish migration pattern. You can find multiple types of fish in the waters which is why many years ago the nickname “fish junction” was given to the Outer Banks!

There’s miles and miles of beach available to choose a great spot to fish at. Anywhere is good as long as you have a rod and reel for bait fish stay in the surf bringing the bigger ones in. A run off, eddy or a spot where birds are feeding on the bait fish will be a good spot to catch that BIG one that everyone wants. Again, it merely depends on your preference. Although, you do need SPECIALIZED equipment if you want to go surf fishing. A rod between 10-12 feet is usually used to cast a 6 oz lead weight, a heavy duty spinning reel, and bait (at the least, bait a 100 yards beyond the breaking surf.) Another inside trick to get to the bigger game is to fish in the shallow shoals where bait fish like to breed.

There is a sand spit at the point of Cape Hatteras which is the most popular surf fishing spot around. The big catch here is red drum between October and November.

So once you have your vacation booked (with Southern Shores Realty that is ;) ), specialized equipment, license, spot picked out, and some friends you will be all ready to go surf fishing here on the Outer Banks! You will also want a cooler to keep your bait in (more tasty for the heavier ones), some sunscreen, and possibly some bug spray. Surf fishing is also a good technique to use if your are trying to introduce the sport to a younger one since it is cost efficient, like I previously stated, and tons of FUN!

Make sure to check on CURRENT fishing regulations involving size and bag limits of catches. You can find information about the citation program, or current fishing regulations can be calling the North Carolina division of marine fisheries at 800-682-2632.

The Outer Banks Visitor bureau provides a fishing line (877-298-4373) Monday-Friday if you need any information, or help. Like if you happen to be wondering what is being caught in the area you will staying in.

Good luck from your Southern Shores Realty with your Outer Banks Current.

How To Become A Better Swimmer

We want everyone who visits the Outer Banks to be as safe as possible in the water. You don’t have to be a professional swimmer, but having the basics of swimming mastered is an absolute must before taking a dip into the ocean. You can turn swimming into a fun daily workout to become a BETTER swimmer before visiting the Outer Banks of North Carolina. I would also advise having the children join in on the workouts. Becoming a better swimmer will improve your well being, give you the body you have always dreamed of, and seriously keep you safe at the beach, it matters! Below are exercising tips to become a better swimmer before arriving on the OBX.

  • Workout everyday of the week. Dedicate certain days to working out twice, and longer workouts. (Most people prefer the weekends for the longer workouts).
  • ALWAYS stretch your muscles out before and after workouts. This will prevent future injuries, torn muscles, and obviously soreness.
  • After stretching, swim about 500 yards as a warm up.
  • Swim a few thousand yards a day (one lap is usually 25 yards).
  • Have a different stroke to work on each day. Day 1- breast stroke, day 2- butterfly, day 3- back stroke, and so on.
  • Learn the turn flip (if swimming in pool) before attempting to avoid back and head injuries. Most strokes have a different turn; be sure to learn all that apply to you.
  • Control, and become in charge of your breathing.
  • Push yourself harder during the last 15 minutes of the workout.
  • Never give up, or stop yourself. You only gain strength by pushing harder! Plus you may loose your goggles.
  • Incorporate other sports that relate to swimming such as running, walking, and soccer. Running especially will improve your speed.

Trust Southern Shores Realty, you will become a fish in absolutely no time at all!

Surviving the Outer Banks’s Rip Currents!

Rip currents are one of the most dangerous beach conditions you can face. So it is of the utmost importance to know what a rip current is so that you are prepared to avoid or keep yourself safe if caught in one. They are long narrow bands of water that can pull any object away from the shore. They are formed when water starts to pile up on the beach instead of flowing sideways away from the breaking waves. After enough water builds up, the pressure forms the narrow path back outwards in the ocean. Surfers will sometimes use them to get further out to catch waves while lifeguards use rip currents to help reach swimmers faster if need be. Not all of us are  proficient swimmers so take a few notes on how to avoid, and survive a rip current.

Rip current survival tips on the Outer Banks of North Carolina:

  1. If a rip current forces you away from the shore simply REMAIN CALM. Your natural instinct would be to panic, and worry if caught in a rip current. But do not worry, if you stay calm you will be able to think and overcome the situation that you are caught up in. Think logically, and know that a rip current will not pull you underwater (only further away from shore).
  2. Redeem your footing on the ocean floor. Redeem your footing on the ocean floor if you are still in shallow water, or if the current happens to not be so powerful. Grasping the bottom with your feet will help you hold yourself in place, and not be dragged out any further. If you cannot find your footing then do not struggle against the current. You will wear yourself out which is why most victims end up drowning. Conserve your energy for more methodical swimming and staying afloat!
  3. IMMEDIATELY call for help. Let others know that you are in need of their help, especially if you are not a good swimmer. By waving BOTH arms and yelling you will gain the attention of lifeguards, and anyone else close by. I would advise not to hesitate on this action.
  4. Swim parallel to the shore to free yourself from the rip current. Rather than swimming against the rip current swim parallel, in either direction, to the shore. Rip currents are usually from 20 to 100 feet wide. Again, do not panic when you realize you are still being pulled further from the shore. This will get you OUT of the current so that you can swim back.
  5. Swim at an angle to the shore. Once you are completely out of the current, start swimming back in at an angle.
  6. If you are still caught in the rip current. Float on your back and go with the current so that you do not tire yourself to the point of drowning. You can regain your energy while awaiting help. If you happen to be alone, wait for the current to dissipate. Rip currents tend to subside 50-100 yards out from shore so eventually you will not be getting pulled any further.

Stay safe while swimming on the Outer Banks Beaches!
