Duck Deli has two locations? | Travel OBX Informed

Located in New Britain, PA

Duck Deli, an extremely popular lunch destination on the Outer Banks, will soon have renovations made to it’s Outer Banks location. Most don’t know, but there are actually two Duck Deli locations in the United States. (One being here on the Outer Banks while the other sits in New Britain, PA.) Last weekend I took a short trip to eastern Pennsylvania, and just. had. to. stop. in! Yes, it’s the same with the same tasty Carolina BBQ inside. With it’s sweet, southern Outer Banks charm as well, surprisingly. With the majority of our travelers coming from this area I thought it was worthy enough for an interesting post to share. How many of you visit this restaurant frequently to just taste the OBX at home? What a perfect dose of the beach way up there!

Duck, North Carolina

Anyway, back to those renovations I mentioned at first. The Outer Banks Duck Deli is in demand for additional parking, and a different seating arrangements. This deli is constantly slam packed throughout the entire summer, for they carry some of the tastiest BBQ on our beach. Plus, it’s quick and easy with their Styrofoam kitchen ware. With that being said, it’s very hard to find parking at this restaurant, even with taking into account that a handful of customers walk to and from the deli. As of right now, customers pull in and out from Duck Road. Future plans show a parking lot behind the building with a one way entrance to it. (How exciting!)

Owners are looking forward to a new building with a larger kitchen, and additional parking; however, the restaurant will still seat on average of 44 inside. (It will just be enclosed, for it’s usually too hot outside.) They would also like to use hard plates for breakfast. The knocking down, and rebuilding of the restaurant will hopefully begin this fall.

It’s just a perfect spot for lunch in Duck, and most take advantage of the quick deliciousness at least once while on vacation. Note that Duck Deli is just another something to love about the Outer Banks! (For me, it’s become a simple tradition to stop in from time to time for a taste of my home.) How about you? A stop for savory taste of the beach?

FREE Kids Night at The Lost Colony | Travel OBX Informed

I was just skimming through the winter newsletter when the word FREE caught my attention. Am I the only one this happens to? With the help of Kitty Hawk Kites kids (12 and under) will receive FREE admission to The Lost Colony on Monday nights… ALL SUMMER LONG! I believe this just may be the news of the week. The Lost Colony  is a fun, family oriented, outdoor drama located on Roanoke Island, North Carolina. Since 1937, over four million people have seen this dramatization of the plight and mysterious disappearance of the first English settlers in America.

It attracts the majority of our visitors to its gorgeous waterside theater; however, tickets can get a bit pricey when your talking about 8 or more people. Now everyone has a chance to discover the mystery of this unique Outer Banks story on Monday nights! On your next Outer Banks vacation, plan to go to the theater for a phenomenal showing on the water, and be sure to arrive early to catch the amazing sunset. It’s something your children will remember, forever.

You can also take part in the backstage tour, held right before show time. Go back in time as your guided through the park, dressing room, and practice stage while getting in depth descriptions of The Lost Colony’s history. It’s truly a neat night out! Below is a recap video of the Backstage Tour from 2011.

Is this OBX Sea Star living? | Travel Informed

Good Morning. As most of you know we’ve had two great aspects to this wonderful week in February. One, temperatures have been in the 60′s for the past two days (we have a high of 70 degrees today!) Two, we’ve had dozens of Sea stars, also referred to as Starfish, or echinoderms covering our shores. It’s been great! However, there’s been a lot of worry around beach, because sometimes it’s hard to determine whether the echinoderms are still living. Or rather, it’s assumed they are not when washed ashore. Watch this video below for a demonstration on how to test whether or not you should take the creatures home with you for decoration, or home crafts.

Bring a beach bucket with you so that when you find the cute stars from the sea you can fill it up with FRESH, CLEAN (no sand), salt water. To test, place the star in the bucket, and wait/ watch it for five to ten minutes. When the time is up you should start to see short tentacles moving along the arms. This is how you can determine whether or not your found treasure is still alive. If so, release it back to it’s home- the sea.

Say you found one that isn’t still living. If it is small you can air dry it to preserve it for many years to come. If it happens to be large buy a bottle of isopropyl alcohol, and soak the star for 1-5 days. Then you will want to air dry it in low humidity, and cool air.

Enjoy!

They are descendants of the Colonial Spanish Wild Mustangs, North Carolina’s state horse, and are very special to the area. It isn’t every day that you run into a pack of wild horses, you know?! Only on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. We are glad to hear that Alonso arrived safely on February 2nd! We wish you luck! High hopes for a larger group of wild mustangs…

You might have already heard, but we have some exciting news going around town that benefits the state of North Carolina, as well as our Spanish Wild Mustang located on the Corova beach up in Corolla. A bill has passed through the US House of Representatives to allow the growth/ expansion of the horses, we hope the Senate is just as optimistic about our endangered herd (the last count was around 144 of them.) They are apart of our beach heritage, and the Outer Banks will do everything possible to keep them alive, as well as healthy. Did you know that they were descendants of the Colonial Spanish Mustangs which is the NC State Horse? Pretty cool stuff.

Currently the herd is allowed to be within the limits of 60 to 110  horses; however, this puts the State’s horse in crucial danger considering they are already specified as an endangered species. The measure of this bill would allow the size of the herd to grow! Yes, please!

When you vacation to the Outer Banks, you have to capability of witnessing these unique, beautiful animals splash through the wake on the sound and through the Atlantic’s surf, roam through the back sand paths right up to vacation rental doorsteps, gallop down the pristine Corova beach, and much more.

It is surely an unbelievable site to see. Either by 4 wheel drive, or you can take a tour from one of the different tour services. This is the best way to go if you don’t have experience driving in an off road route, for it’s very easy to get stuck in the sand! Also, you must keep 50 ft away from them, at the least. Tour guides know the spots, and angles to get you the best views. Browse through our Outer Banks vacation rentals to reserve your stay today!

Cape Hatteras National Seashore’s New Driving Regulations…

The Cape Hatteras National Seashore is widely known as one of the most gorgeous areas in North Carolina while being a popular destination for many of our Outer Banks guests. Most tend to make a day trip out of driving down Highway 12 to Hatteras for a fun and different style of driving, fishing excursions, and lighthouse climbing. It’s one of the prettiest areas around, and is about a 2.5 hour drive from South Nags Head. Not too shabby considering several families make the drive.

The NPS (National Park Service)  has developed an ORV (off road vehicle) management plan, and special regulations to comply with executive orders, as well as preserve the unique plants and wildlife of this dynamic barrier island ecosystem, while permitting the use of vehicles on designated ORV routes at the seashore. Makes sense, right? For we are truly a fragile section of barrier islands that needs to be taken care of. If not, the situation could in fact be worse. This regulation will become effective February 15, 2012. It requires all beach drivers to hold an ORV permit to operate on the routes at the seashore. You may obtain these permits at any three NPS permit offices on Coquina Beach, the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse Visitor Center, and the Ocracoke Visitor Center. (Offices are open year round.) The cost of an annual ORV permit is $120, and is valid for one year. For a 7- day permit, the cost is $50. These Off Road Vehicle Permits are only valid for the calendar year in which you buy them.

Personally, I’d just head up to Corolla which is another off roading destination, home to the infamous Spanish wild mustangs. The access is located at the end of the road in Corolla, North Carolina, and provides a sense of mystery, relaxation, and amazing views. Just as the Cape Hatteras National Seashore does. If you decide to explore any of our beaches by car on your next vacation, please be respectful or all of the regulations, both old and new: get your permit if driving in Hatteras, stay at least 50 feet from the horses when you see them on the norther beaches, be cautious of other beach goers, and watch your speed. But most of all, have a safe, fun, and enjoyable vacation on the Outer Banks!
